  5.     Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young wanted to accomplish in
  6. Georgia what L. Douglas Wilder had in Virginia last year:
  7. become his state's first black Governor. But Young's dream went
  8. a-glimmering last week as lieutenant governor Zell Miller
  9. drubbed him in a runoff for the Democratic nomination, winning
  10. 62% of the vote.

  12.     While some of Young's supporters blamed racism for his
  13. defeat, most observers gave more credit to Miller's
  14. single-minded support of a state lottery; Young wanted to put
  15. the idea to a referendum. Young's critics charged that he had
  16. started his campaign too late. The crowning irony: Young, who
  17. first gained fame as an aide to Martin Luther King Jr., did not
  18. pay enough attention to black voters, losing some to Miller and
  19. failing to inspire a large black turnout.
